I used to wake up already exhausted before the day even started. If I was lucky, I’d whisper a quick prayer before little feet hit the floor or the baby started crying, hoping it would carry me through the chaos.

A well-meaning friend once said, “Just wake up earlier for quiet time,” as if I had extra hours, or energy, to spare.

Most mornings, I’d open my Bible, wanting to 'feel' something. I loved God, so shouldn’t I love His Word? But instead, it felt confusing… and honestly, a little boring.

I’d read a few verses, check it off the list, and move on, feeling disconnected and guilty that I couldn’t seem to “get it right.”

What I didn’t realize was that the problem wasn’t me and it definitely wasn't the Bible. It was that no one had ever shown me how to study Scripture in a way that actually brought it to life.

 

 

I was an angry mom and jabby wife.

 

I went to one of the largest Christian universities in the world. I took a Bible study course from a well-known influencer and bought all the Matthew Henry Bible Commentary books. Thankfully, a mentor at my church opened my eyes to the reality that I had been over-focused on man’s opinion of the Bible and underfocused on God’s. So I ditched the devotionals and the overuse of commentary.

I am AMAZED that no one ever taught me to let the Holy Spirit be my teacher and to ask God to reveal His Word to me.

Almost overnight, my Bible reading became one of my favorite parts of the day. I finally understood it, I was even looking up Greek and Hebrew with ease.

And it transformed me from the inside out. God’s Word pierced the darkness in my heart, opened my eyes to what’s truly happening in the world, shaped my opinions on current events, and guided me in discipling and parenting my children well.
